Where should Guildford’s e-bike docking stations go?

An exciting e-bike scheme is coming to Guildford with 300+ e-bikes and 50 docking stations. A survey is open until May 2024 for local people to have their say on where docking stations should go. We hope our readers would offer their support for the scheme which will only encourage cycling in Guildford. Beryl will be operating the Council’s scheme. There is more information on our Guildford e-bike share scheme and cycle network study page.

GBUG finds it ironic that the e-bike survey has been launched immediately after the announcement to cancel most of the London Road active travel scheme. The decision on London Road was incredibly disappointing. We look forward to the e-bike scheme encouraging new people into the delight of cycling, and who subsequently realise how much Guildford needs better cycling infrastructure.

I suppose this scheme should be welcomed. But I feel that this is putting the cart before the horse. Without the infrastructure in place, I worry that few people will feel safe enough to use the bikes for everyday journeys. I don’t know of any proper bicycle lanes in Guildford that are physically separated from motor vehicles. They are especially needed on the main roads and the town centre’s one-way system.

I worry that if the scheme has low usage levels, this will be used to speciously argue that people have little desire for active travel.
