Surrey County Council is currently (Jan 2021) running a trial to reduce motor traffic on Walnut Tree Close, by installing a one way section, whilst still permitting two-way travel by cyclists. It is hoped that this will make WTC a safer corridor for cyclists to travel to and from the town centre and station. The trial will run until 17th February.
G-BUG is very supportive, and we urge cyclists to try out the route, and email SCC on WalnutTreeClose.Trial@surreycc.gov.uk with your feedback
(hopefully positive!) . It would be appreciated if you could copy them to info@g-bug.org so that we can gauge overall sentiment.
The trial forms part of the Town Centre Transport Package, which also includes replacing the Walnut Bridge over the River Wey opposite the station with a wider and more cycle friendly crossing, via which it will ultimately be possible to reach the town centre at North Street.
The trial is a much reduced version of that which was originally intended. Two options were originally proposed (one way, and complete closure) each to run for a period of several months. Also, the relatively quiet current conditions of Covid lockdown, plus the imminent start of works on the Walnut replacement bridge and the Solum redevelopment of the station, mean that the trial is taking place in very unusual conditions. Nevertheless, we agree that this arrangement should provide a safe(r) cycle corridor, so please try it out!
