Stage 1 of the London Road Active Travel Scheme runs from Boxgrove Roundabout to Aldi and includes:

  • Safer cycle paths segregated from road traffic up at pavement level.
  • Creating new crossing points
  • Upgrading bus stops

Please support this scheme by by emailing all Surrey County Council cabinet members* before the middle of October. Please add one or two sentences as to why this is important for you and your family. Be sure to add your home address to the email. The cabinet will make a decision on stage 1 of the scheme on 29th October 2024. Without your support this scheme will not go ahead.

For further information see our London Road Active Travel Scheme page.

*If opening on a PC, the email may be placed in your drafts folder.

Existing cycling provision along London road is just a painted dotted white line making a narrow cycle lane. Some cars are driving in the cycle lane.

We at GBUG are very excited about this exciting scheme but Guildford needs better cycling infrastructure for the scheme to reach its full potential. To help GBUG campaign for safe cycling infrastructure, join our mailing list or email info@g-bug.org.

See https://beryl.cc/scheme/guildford for further details about hiring the bikes, and GBUG’s page about the campaign.

Charlotteville Cycling Club are proud to be hosting the CANYON Guildford Town Centre Races on Wednesday 3rd July.

This will be the 40th anniversary of the event and with the extended course which was trialled last year. It’s set to be a great evening of racing, with U8s to elite level racing there really is something for everyone to enjoy watching.

Due to the event growing and now part of the British Cycling National Circuit Series for the 2nd year, they are up against it for volunteers to marshall the event. If anyone is able to give any time to marshal they would absolutely appreciate the support. Each volunteer gets a Bottle(bidon) and T-Shirt for giving up their time.

Race times are shown in the image below and they would have marshal’s in place by 5pm up until the final race which finishes approx. 9.30pm.

Marshal duties are fairly simple, they ensure the crossing points and certain areas on the course are manned to provide guidance to spectators and also close the crossing points when riders are approaching.

If you are able to volunteer, please let Mark Rymell know what time you’re available from and to, via email (rymell@hotmail.com) and he will coordinate locations and meeting times.

Plans for a Burpham to Guildford active travel scheme in Guildford were diluted this year despite more residents supporting it than voicing concerns.

And people of Guildford will soon take to the streets to continue the call to put people, and especially children, first when designing travel routes around town.

In the afternoon of Saturday 27 April, you’re invited to join a family-friendly mass cycle ride around Guildford.

Masses of us riding for safer streets. For riders of all abilities and ages. Saturday 27th April. 12.45: picnic meetup in Stoke Park London Road entrance. 14.00: start the ride. Let us choose how to get around Guildford.

Bring your blankets and sandwiches at 12:45 p.m. for a pre-ride picnic near the London Road entrance to Stoke Park. Then at 2:00 p.m. we’ll set off on a slow-paced, marshalled, circular ride that will be suitable for anyone, even cycling newbies, to join in with.

One of the ride organisers, local mum Chloe Sutcliffe said, “After around 300 people turned out for each ride in 2023, we are hoping to see the numbers increase this year. Everyone, no matter their age, is welcome to join the fun and help show that Guildford does want safer infrastructure so more of us can choose to leave our cars at home when travelling to school, the shops or the park”.

Fellow organiser and local parent Beth Moore said, “I didn’t take up cycling regularly until I settled down in Guildford several years ago. I hate the frustration of sitting in a car in traffic, breathing in pollution. Public transport isn’t reliable enough where I live. Walking and riding our bikes are the only options for my family when we don’t want to use the car. Riding around town has really improved my fitness and mood. This historic town wasn’t built for cars and has so much potential to be a wonderful place to cycle.”

This is the third ride organised by the Guildford arm of Kidical Mass. The first two rides both attracted hundreds of participants. We are part of the Kidical Mass movement, a global campaign which envisions a future where children and young people can safely and independently cycle and walk around the streets in their local areas.

A number of local politicians have told us they will attend, including Angela Goodwin, MP, Zoe Franklin and several councilors from Guildford Borough Council.

You can find out more by following the Kidical Mass Facebook page, and on the G-BUG event site.
