Our Vision

To make cycling in Guildford more safe, convenient and enjoyable. Our objectives are summarised in our Vision below.

Who is GBUG?

GBUG is a group of members from Guildford and the surrounding communities and villages who share a passion for making the Borough more liveable through increased cycling.

We are made up from a committee that makes decisions on GBUG priorities and activities and a wider membership who attend our open meetings and events. GBUG has been going since 2015.

We are always looking for new members to help out, whether that be on the committee or coming along to our open meetings and events. There is no membership fee. Join us here and follow us on Facebook

A voice for cyclists

GBUG is the leading voice for cyclists in Guildford and the surrounding area. We work closely with Guildford Borough Council and Surrey County Council to push for cycling-friendly design whenever roads are upgraded or public spaces are regenerated. In 2023 GBUG received funding from Councillors Furniss, Goodwin and Potter for collaboration software which helps the group to communicate and meet online.

As well as campaigning for segregated cycle lanes in the centre of Guildford, GBUG pushes for longer-distance cycle routes to connect up Guildford to the surrounding towns and villages.

We seek common interest with other ‘non-motorised users‘, notably pedestrians and the disabled, encouraging initiatives and infrastructure design which benefit all these groups.

GBUG Successes

Some of GBUG’s successes have included:

  • The Guildford Godalming Greenway phase 1 from Millbrook to Shalford including Dagley Lane has been 90% constructed. The remainder of the route is going through public consultation.
  • Working with developers to improve cycle facilities. For example the Cathedral development design initially showed cycle storage upstairs which would have meant carrying bikes up several flights of steps. Following a meeting with GBUG this was upgraded to the majority of cycle storage being at ground level with direct access to a roadway. Cycle storage for oversized bikes such as cargo bikes or trikes was added to the designs and doors were made electric.
  • Securing a new bridge for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders at the M25/A3 Junction.

Other successes for Guildford where GBUG have worked closely with the council include:

  • A25 shared cycle lanes from Boxgrove roundabout to the Cathedral business park.
  • College link from Guildford railway station to the Guildford college (95% complete).
  • Walnut Tree Close one way (approved March 2023).
  • SMC west from Royal Surrey County Hospital to Guildford station (complete).
  • Walnut Bridge (by the Odeon cinema) (complete).
  • Guildford bike share scheme (expected late 2024).
