I attended a community forum on 4 November as G-BUG rep, where the Environment Agency presented on progress with developing a Flood Alleviation Scheme for the town. Our concerns are to ensure that the scheme does not unduly affect cycling adjacent to the River Wey (most notably of course along the towpath), and, more positively, to seek opportunities for the scheme to deliver benefit to cycling (eg improvements to the towpath surface, or opening up the opposite bank of the river to cycling). Slides are below: there was no specific reference to cycling, although the scheme objectives do include delivering a positive impact for the environment of the town centre, not simply building intrusive walls along the river. That said, there is limited space adjacent to the river in the town centre and we must be watchful that the final scheme design doesn’t eat away at the towpath.
